After replacing my new secondary HDD, some application keeps hanging and cause file unreadable unless reboot

I had a SSD as system drive, and recently replaced my squealing old secondary HDD with a new ST3000MD001As the title said, then use Steam to start download and install some dozens GB games to my new HDD, but progress stuck in the middle.

I restart Steam but no help, so I thought there's some corrupted files with download cache and try to delete those cache files manually, however the explorer freezes every time when I select specific file in cache folder, or the recycle progress takes forever if I try to remove the whole cache folder. reboot will recover the file accessibility and finish installation, but few hour/days after same problem will happen on other game's download/install progress.

Same problem happens to my instant chat software as well on the new drive. it will randomly lose response in the very moment of send message button pressed, or during the messages receiving activities in the backgrouond. As the Steam's problem before, I always found some message log file or image cache file in my instant chat software folder become unaccessible. reboot system, problem gone, soon again, very annoying.

I tried:
Chkdsk on new HDD;
Fully reinstall Steam & instant chat software;
Fully format my new HDD and copy my files back;
Add full control authority to my current user in HDD properties;
None will help.

Haven't tried to set my BIOS settings from AHCI to IDE, not sure its useful or hamful. HDD's firmware seems up to date(CC26). Windows event has nothing to log except application hang.

Please, someone help me out of this annoying problem, appreciate!
Sorry for my bad description, I'm not native.

You're welcome, WinsStars!

Here's something else to try:
Click Start,
Right click on Computer, select Manage, which will open the Management Console.
Click the plus sign next to Event Viewer,
Click the plus sign next to Windows Logs,
Left click on Application.

This will open the Application Logs. Scroll down the list and see if you have any applications marked with a Red "Error" sign or a Yellow "Warning" sign. Left click on the application for more info. Most of it will be very difficult to understand, but at least it will show which (if any) applications are causing the Hangs. Also, at the bottom left of the box there will be a Title saying "More Information" with a blue hyperlink that you can click on for additional info.

Welcome to the TH community, WinsStars!

I'd advise you to run the HDD manufacturer's diagnostic tool, instead of chkdsk. The utility will help you determine the health and SMART status of the drive, just make sure you run both the short and the long tests.
Pretty good job with the troubleshooting so far, but I'd also suggest you to try using a different SATA cable to connect the drive or even try swapping the SATA port on the motherboard, to see if things will improve then.

Since it's a new HDD, you can also contact the manufacturer's customer support and send an RMA request to get a replacement, if the problem persists.

Keep me posted with the SMART results, though. Good luck! :)

:wahoo: Thank you SuperSoph_WD!

Following your advise, I had a series test on my new HDD with SeaTools in hours. According to test log, the HDD have passed all test including:
S.M.A.R.T check,
Short Drive Self Test,
Short Generic,
Long Generic.
:??: The HDD seems no problem at all...

Speaking of SATA cable, in fact, sorry I forgot to tell that I also tried swapping it to another port on the motherboard before. So try to buy and replace some new SATA cable is the last possible solution so far?

And, sure, here's some SMART information I copied from AIDA64 (SeaTools seems just tell me SMART check pass but no details):

01 Raw Read Error Rate 6 118 99 195147120 OK: Value is normal

I would leave AHCI selected. No need for IDE.

SMART data does not indicate any obvious problems.

If you are in USA, call 1-800-SEAGATE and follow voice prompts to HDD Tech Support. Explain your problem to them and see what they can recommend.

Good luck!

Hey there again, WinsStars!

It seems like the HDD is alright, indeed. Since you can't try using a different SATA cable with the HDD, you can also try connecting it to another computer until you get a new SATA cable replacement. Just like @Yogi mentioned, I'd not temper with the SATA mode and leave AHCI selected for your storage drives.
If you haven't tried it already, you can also reset BIOS using one of the methods listed here: http://www.wikihow.com/Reset-Your-BIOS
This will get your BIOS settings back to factory defaults, so you'd need to reconfigure them after the reset.

Hope it helps. Keep us posted! :)

:wahoo: SuperSoph_WD, Y0GI, Thanks for your reply!

Today a several SATA 3.0 cables I ordered before had arrived, I got them connected. I also got my BIOS reset, and leave the SATA mode to AHCI. All according to your advices.

:p So far so good, but I need some more days to make sure this really works out the problem. I will report the result to you later.

Sounds good, Thanks for the feedback.

:( Unfortunately... problem still there...

On the day 3, I almost thought it's solved, but all of a sudden the application hangs, and file unaccessible as usual.

For now, I'm totally clueless.

Are you in the USA? Did you try calling 1-800-SEAGATE?

Hey there again, WinsStars!

I'd agree with @YoGI and advise you to contact the HDD manufacturer's customer support for assistance with the drive. However, it might not be the source of the issue at all, so you should also consider getting in touch with a professional computer repair service. The tech guys there will be able to do a full PC diagnostics and, hopefully, determine the source of the hangs and freezes.

Best of luck!

Hi SuperSoph_WD, Y0GI, sorry for delay, I just trying to find more solution these days. :p

No I'm not native, I'm not in the USA. I contacted retailer's customer service before, according to what they say, if I request a RMA, the local manufacturer's support here will ask me to send the HDD to them first, then make a full test just like I did before. If they can't find any obviously quality issue, they won't accept any replacement or return, they'll just send the same HDD back to me, plus they won't offer any test result report of it. The whole process will take about 15 working days, so I thought this will just waste my time and will solve nothing...

Sure I tried get help from some of my tech friends too, one day I even got my windows reinstalled just for this, but problem reappears soon later on that day.

Through these days, I didn't solve this though, but I found more trace/pattern of it:
Steam seems never had that problem again after system reinstall, now the instant messenger is the only victim I could noticed;
Since I often start my machine around 9:00 AM each day, the problem will jump out at 11:30 AM ~ 12:50 AM mostly.
If the messenger had the problem once, it will more likely be ok in the rest time of the day.

In fact through so many trouble shootings, I start to thinking the HDD things is a distraction from the begining, it's just a coincidence. The real problem is about the antivirus software (Avast) maybe, or the VPN software (Astrill), or some self update changing the connection method or something for the messenger itself.

I'll keep on looking for this, if I could work this out or find something new, I'll let you know.

You guys here are really kindness and enthusiasm, my gratitude to you! :)
