Hi all,

I recently built a computer with the Asus z170 AR motherboard. Whenever I plug in my headphones the RealTek Audio Manager recognises my headphones as speakers. This is extremely annoying as the volume is much lower, and the general audio quality is much worse.

I was thinking about getting a semi-decent sound card if that would fix the issue. But I have also seen people talking about DACs, usb amps, and I'm not sure what to buy.

Any advice would be appreciated!

You need a front panel jack for your headphones, which plugs into a header on your motherboard. That's the way it knows to differentiate usually I believe. Your motherboard should have quality sound on board, and should auto-recognize. If you don't have a case with a front panel jack you can purchase one that will fit in your front bays.

I have to NZXT S340, it doesn't have an front bays. The realtek software thing that came with my motherboard is really horrible, just want something to boost audio quality, what about a dac or something?

Are you plugging USB headphones in or a 3.5mm jack? Digital sound is superior, I think what you want is an ADC although your sound card will produce a digital signal so it would be pointless.

There is an option in Realtek's software to turn off front port sensing. You'll have to manually switch back and forth between speakers and headphones, but the sound quality should be better. Look through it thoroughly, you will find it. You should be able to set the audio quality higher as well.
