I am planning on buying an r9 290x in the not too distant future and was wondering Will I bottleneck with i5 4690k 4GHz OC with an R9 290x and R9 280 in crossfire?

Solution
Hi, no it wont bottleneck but those two cards wont work in crossfire. Plus if they did work, the r9 290x would be downclocked to r9 280 spoeeds. so just get another r9 280 and crossfire the two r9 280s.

I have two questions.
1. If they can't be used in crossfire how do you know that the r9 290x will be downclocked?.
2. What determines whether a graphics card can be used with another in crossfire?.

Hi, it will downclock because any card in crossfire with a weaker card, (Eg. HD 7870 and 7850 crossfire) downclocks so that the two cards match clock and memory speeds. Also, cards can be crossfire if they have the same architecture. AMD have a pretty good chart for crossfire compatibility. It usually if the cards are in the same series, (Eg, HD 7800 series) they can be crossfired. But usually it's a good idea with any setup to get the exact same card. :)
