Will my 3 year old system bottleneck a 980 GTX?

Hi there guys!

I am very happy to report that my MOBO/RAM/Proc./PSU have not failed in 3-4 years!!

I wanted to plan a bit for future upgrades and wanted some quick advice!

I have a 760 GTX and was wondering, if I want to upgrade, will anything in my system bottleneck a GTX 980? What model will be the equivalent of the 980 GTX next year?

Should I upgrade any other component? RAM?

Motherboard is an ASRock Z68 Extreme3 Gen 3

i5 2500k with Turbo boost to 4.6 Mhz

RAM: PC3-12800 (800 Mhz) G. Skill Ripjaws, DDR3 8 gigs. I am not running anything as I write this thread, except CPU-Z and it says DRAM Frequency at 665.1 Mhz.

PSU: Corsair GS800

The i5-2500k is still a very good performer, especially with a good overclock. You should still be able to pair a GTX 980 with it without much issue at all.

Games are starting to require more RAM at this point, so 16GB would be a good upgrade. Your PSU is still plenty to run a card like the GTX 980.

If you're waiting to upgrade until next year you might want to hold off until the new Pascal line comes out from Nvidia. It's going to be a huge jump in performance from the 900 line and might be a great investment.

You have DDR3-1600 RAM running at 1333MHz (665.1 * 2 ~ 1333). DRAM frequency doesn't fluctuate like CPU frequency can, since the CPU fluctuates based on a multiplier of BCLK while RAM is a fixed ratio on BCLK. Since BCLK itself doesn't change, neither does DRAM frequency. This means that when CPU-Z reports 665.1MHz as the current value, it is absolutely improperly configured and you are using the RAM at a slower speed than you intended.

As for your question, only nVidia insiders would know what the company is planning. Go ahead and search for their plans for 2016 but I'm sure you're recognized that the release targets don't always happen on time and some plans just don't go anywhere (eg, Broadwell).

Hi, CPU-Z also says:

Timings table:

JEDEC #4
Frecuency - 685

5,6, xmp-1600

say 761,800, 800 mhz respectively...

Thanks for the answer!

What RAM is actually relevant FPS-wise, coming from 1600? 2133? 3000? I saw that my MOBO page on newegg says on ram specs 2100 (OC) SO i guess i could get 16 gigs of that.

Do I need to upgrade anything for Pascal? (MOBO/proc./ram??)

From your motherboard specification page:

Dual Channel DDR3 memory technology
- 4 x DDR3 DIMM slots
- Supports DDR3 2133(OC)/1866(OC)/1600/1333/1066 non-ECC, un-buffered memory

Your overclocked i5-2500k should be able to make use of 2133 Mhz RAM, so this would be a solid RAM upgrade:

Memory: G.Skill Ares Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-2133 Memory ($59.99 @ Newegg)
Total: $59.99
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

That's a great price!!

Might as well get 32gigs to fill out the Motherboard haha...

In the official site:

http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/Z68%20Extreme3%20Gen3/?cat=Memory

The 2133 speed G. Skill show only 4GB, would it be a problem for all 4 slots to be 8gigs?

------

This is great, maybe I don't have to upgrade Motherboard or processor for a long time since SB 2500k is so good :)!

So to conclude:

ONLY thing I NEED to upgrade FOR USE WITH PASCAL is the RAM to 2133 - 16-32 gigs? I do Not need to upgrade MB or from my 2500k for Pascal right?

You should be fine with what you have and 16GB of RAM for a year or two more. The i5-2500k still pairs well with the current high-end gaming cards.

As far as Pascal specifically, that I can't guarantee. Until the card actually comes out and bench marks can be run there is no resposible way to assure you that your current rig will work with the card. Nobody knows for sure yet.
