Thinking about upgrading, advice needed

Hey everyone. I haven't followed the graphics cards wars in the last couple years so i was hoping to get a bit of advice and avoid a bunch of internet research. For the last few years i have been running 2 Radeon HD 7970's in crossfire, and they have been great. But i'm looking at reducing the footprint of my PC sitting on my desk and was thinking it might be a good time to get a new video card (or 2) as i originally bought these to handle 5x1 eyefinity gaming. I've since gone back to a single 144hz monitor (eventually perhaps going back to a 3x1 setup), but notice my cards seem to be chugging a bit on some of the newer games.
Since i have a Corsair Carbide Air 540 case sitting around that i got on sale ages ago, i was thinking i would rebuild into that. I am actually wondering if there are any new single or dual card solutions that might be worth upgrading to. The rest of my PC i feel is still ok for now, i will probably look at upgrading other components later. I'm not really feeling beholden specifically to ATI or Nvidia at all, i just want a good card that will be a decent upgrade for the 7970s i have right now. I really only stuck with ATI for so long cause they were the only ones that could do 5 monitor in an eyefinity arrangement.

well, what is the budget? and 2 7970's are quite beefy, that's the same performance as a fury x or a 980ti.

Sorry, never listed a budget cause i don't really have one. And it would have to be a pretty significant upgrade for me to really think about it. If i thought my performance gains out of a $1000 card were worth it, i'd consider getting it. Although if you're saying that 2 7970's are still on par with the most powerful cards i can get today, i'm really not sure i would do it. I got those cards almost 3 years ago... i kinda thought the technology would have progressed a bit more. Although i guess it would mean the power of the cards have doubled if i need 2 7970's to equal the power of one of today's new cards...

you could go for dual fury x or dual 980ti but that is over $1000 and it would be the double of those two 7970's
the fury x's are smaller but have a radiator and have better xfire scaling, but the 980ti's have more vram, and that might come in handy when using that many displays, and if you want you can also pick 2 390x's up, they have even more vram, but lower performance. personally i would go for the fury x's.

Thanks for the input. For me up in Canada, the fury x and 980Ti are each almost $1000. Getting 2 right now might be pushing it right now even if i don't really have a budget. :p
I could try and sell my 7970's and then just get one for now and then another later when i feel like upgrading again.
