Should I upgrade a i5 3330 to an i7 4790k?

Hello, I was wondering if I should upgrade my i5 3330 to an i7 4790k. I will probably be overclocking the 4790k if I do end up purchasing it. I have heard that the i7 4790k doesn't provide much of a performance boost from the i5 3330 so that's why I am wondering if I should upgrade or not. I currently use my system for gaming and some streaming on Twitch.tv. Thanks.

It would need a motherboard upgrade as well since one is lga 1155 the other lga 1150.
Gaming wise not much in it.

It depends on the games you play and if you are bottlenecked by your current i5.

Hi

I'm looking at this i7 as well as I am getting usage CPU usage in Mad Max, Fallout 4 and syndicate.

I posted a bit ago on here about if I should upgrade to it next year, many people said I should due to the higher frequency and double the threads.

I just want a CPU that won't get bottlenecked in game and just sits back and lets me run games smoothly.

Average over all games it is more like 99%.

Dudes the cpu`s u have is still technically fine, upgrading to a Haswell i7 in my view is not wise. Seeing as you will need to upgrade your mobo anyway with both upgrades, I think it would make more sense to go for a nice and beastly Skylake i5-6600K and a Z series 1151 mobo and then you will have the best gaming experience(cpu wise) that you can as the i7`s are still not truly needed for gaming even though it`s nice to have one.

Yes but this showing average fps, it doesn't show fps that you get in cities. If I went and played Fallout 4 tonight no matter what settings i'm on I will always get 90-100% CPU usage in cities.

I have no idea where my CPU is on that chart..

Why would I need a mobo switch when the i7 4790 (none K) is socket 1150 and so my mobo has the correct socket....

Yes but this town isn't the big main city around diamond city, the first city where you fight the death claw I never got fps drop. Its the big buildings all around Diamond city where my CPU goes 100%...

So the whole bottom half of the map basically.

CPU usage of 90%-100% does not mean you have a bottleneck, although it does indicate you could have a bottleneck. You need to look at the other side of the equation, the GPU. Is the GPU usage low at the same time? And it doesn't even matter if your FPS are at your preferred level. Are your FPS good or bad when this happens?

Really bad stutter 45-58fps.
I'll check GPU load when I get home but how do I get vysnc off in that game as I can't force it off with my control panel.

Assuming it is like Skyrim, there is an .ini setting. By what I gleamed from that page, Nvidia cards can force it off in the Nvidia control panel, and with AMD there are a few .ini files which need a little editing.

If you are running a i5-3330 now then you are running on socket 1155, the 4790 is sockrt 1150 and the i5-6600 and 6600k is socket 1151

After quite the effort I got vysc off and I when I jumped int he game where I had saveds last time whichwas the big city I got instantly 45fps and my CPU was like 80%, GPU 40%, GPU memory about 2.1GB.

So have no idea what is going on... I think the game is basically broke.

That is a CPU bottleneck. The 80% load is for all cores added together, and one is at its limit. An OC would help, but I hear this is a Fallout 4 issue in general. it's very CPU heavy, and it does like a lot of cores/threads and fast memory (which might mean it can be memory bottlenecked at times).

So, the question now becomes, is it worth upgrading for this one game? Or maybe you are having issues in other games too.

Nope all my other games are dandy...well except AC Syndicate but that's Ubisoft so i'm not that bothered, at least the game was free with my card so i'm not at a loss.

Yeah, I saw a video of AC Syndicate, and that game requires an i7 to run smooth in some spots.
