Is this a viable way of having a gaming PC?

I am getting a PC for gaming in a month or two and noticed something my friend did.

He bought a computer from Best Buy for like offices (8 GB RAM and an i5) and threw an R7 370 in there for a pretty good PC.
Should I do this or should I just build one? Right now my mother is very against building one, and doesn't want to let me build my own.
But on the other hand, those office PC's have bad PSU's and tend to blow up upon heavy load.

So if I should build one, what should I tell my mom to persuade her, or should I just spiff up an office computer?

Solution
Just build one. Saving money and it's a great experience. Persuade your mom by telling her that you'll learn a lot, and if anything doesn't work, all the individual parts have warranties much longer than a whole PC
