7.1 Headset vs 7.1 Mobo surround sound

Hi all,
I just bought the HyperX Cloud 2 which come with a USB Virtual 7.1 surround. My Motherboard is the Z97 Extreme4 which has a 7.1 sound integrated.

I use the headphones for gaming. What is the 'best' way to use the headphones and the 7.1 surround? Plug them straight to the motherboard or use the HyperX's USB 7.1 dongle?

Also for most games you can select the type of output you have so 2, Headphones, 5.1, 7.1 etc.. What should I select when I use the 7.1 dongle or the motherboard?

My questions are:
1. Should I plug straight to my mobo or use the 7.1 dongle?
2. Should I put the setting under 7.1 or Headphones in the games menu?

If your not getting surround sound that's because it doesn't actually work on headsets. Some claim otherwise but in my experience its nothing more than gimmick and nothing like proper surround sound

I don't see you asking a question here.

However, just some information:
The HyperX Cloud 2 is connected through USB and handles Digital to Analog conversion and amplification for the headset on its own. The integrated soundcard on your motherboard will not be used.

Practically the HyperX Cloud 2 is it's own sound card.

You can't really expect surround sound from a headset. They claim Virtual Surround sound, which is what it is, but it never comes near actual surround sound. Virtual Surround Sound means they play with the frequencies so it sounds like it's coming from (for example) your back.

I personally have a Razer Tiamat 7.1, they actually stuffed 10 drivers (doubles for the Center and sub) in this headset, claiming "Real surround sound". Well, it does work, in a way that the surround from the back sounds slightly from my back. But I still can't call it proper surround sound.

So if you really want surround sound, your only option is buying a full surround speaker set.
