Why was crossfire an option before, but not now?

Hey guys and gals,
I should be seeing the option to CorssfireX in my Radeon Settings, but sadly I don't. I just went through a small upgrade and as far as I can see, everything lines up compatibility-wise. The only change I made was a (better) mobo, added more ram and a new Intel i7 to go with the better mobo.

One of my card's bus interface is at x16 while the other is at x2. I am led to believe this might have something to do with Radeon not thinking my computer is Crossfire compatible.

Here are my specs:
- Asus Z97-AR mobo
- 16 GB DDR3 Ram 1600 MHz
- 2 X AMD R9 290
- Intel i7-4790K

Any help or clues would be much appreciated - spent about 4 hours yesterday and 3 hours today searching forums, reinstalling the GPUs, reinstalling old AMD Catalysts... etc. No luck.
Thanks!

Solution
move the card to the other PCIe x16 slot. From what i see there are 2 x16 Gen 3 and 1 x16 Gen 2 that is wired as a x2!! Take the cards out. Look on the inside of the slot. You can see the physical pins in there. They are also labeled. One should be something like PCIEx16_1 and PCIEX16_2 for the x16 slots

You, sir. Are a god! I don't know why when I tried PCIe slots 1 and 2 yesterday it didn't work. I guess I just needed the positive vibes from professor drtweak! Working like a dream now.
Thank you for taking the time to help me out. I truly appreciate it.
Cheers!
