I've had XP SP3 installed in a partitioned hard disk. It was running ok until one day. Now it's not working. Here's the current situation:

When trying to start normally it gives BSoD after logo. The error number is:
STOP: 0x0000007E (0xC0000005 ...

When trying to run in safe mode it loads .sys files etc. as if it will initiate safe mode, but no. A new black screen with "Safe Mode" text on each 4 corners and an information box in the middle of the screen comes. In the box it is written:
Windows XP Setup cannot run under Safemode. Setup will restart now.

I tried with Windows XP install CD;
Repair installed XP, fixmbr, fixboot, chkdsk
didn't work.

So, I did this: Installed a new XP on the same partition where old XP is installed. It installed and the new XP installation works. I can explore hard disk to see if old XP and files/folders/data are there. And yes, they are where they were before and I can reach them. So, now I have 2 XP installations as:
C:\Windows
C:\WinXP

I suspected Rootkit. From new XP installation, I did run some safety applications: Gmer, TdssKiller, Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. No result, but also I am not sure if this way they can check old XP Windows directory/registry/services properly.

I made a Surface Test with HDD Scan program to reveal bad sector if any. Not any.

Currently I don't know if it's anything related to MBR, boot initialization, physically damaged sector.
Also there in one more thing: Before old XP went down its drive label was enumerated as E: So it was always E:\Program Files, E:\Windows etc. I don't know if it's anything to do with it.

According to your expereiences is this situation any familiar to you and what are your diagnostics on this problem?

That error typically points to a faulty driver.
But from where you are now, just re-install your applications and off you go again.

But I would recommend updating to at least Windows 7 if you intend being online with that system. It's no longer secure and you're asking for trouble otherwise.

Driver you mean hard disk itself? Then I incline to say it's not the problem because as I said I installed new XP and it works. If hard disk wasn't ok it'd give error right?

But what can you say about previous XP label being enumerated as E:\ instead of C:\ . Is there a way to trick around drive letter?

Driver meaning software programs that control your hardware.
Your XP was assigned E: as you mention that you had it installed on a partitioned hard disk. I am also assuming that you had it installed on the 2nd partition and not the primary partition on that drive.
