Monitor Problems "Cable Not Connected" but still works

Hi Guys,

I've checked most threads and so far, I haven't found anything similar to what I experience.

A little background: I just got a new video card. Prior to that, i've been using Intel Graphics with my monitor for about 3 days with no issues.

- My monitor is an Acer S200HQL VGA monitor and the GPU I got is a gtx 960.

- I am using a VGA to DVI adapter.

Although the monitor says "cable not connected", it still works. I can play games but the monitor is recognized as Generic Non-PnP Monitor. I would be okay with this but I won't let me play some games on native resolution and it won't let me play some games at all.

It shows me a "input not supported" error which I don't really get because I made sure the adapter and the monitor are really attached to the GPU DVI slot. I already tried the update drivers fix but when I select the driver, it shows some "digital signatures not found" error ( i don't remember what it says exactly, i'm at work at the moment)

If anyone has any ideas on how to fix this, please help.

Solution
I would recommend that you go to Control Panel and click on Nvidia Control Panel. Then click on the Change Resolution menu item. The next screen will allow you to adjust the resolution.

If you are not seeing the Nvidia control Panel it is available here with the drivers for the GTX 960.

The "Display Device on: VGA" is an artifact of using the VGA adapter.

I'm not sure what you mean by "Did you install the monitor within Windows?". All I did was put it in the right slot and tightened it made sure the little screws were in. For the second question, yes. It does show up as generic monitor. When I was using the IGP, it recognizes the monitor but when I got the GPU and plugged the monitor there, it shows generic monitor.

You can install the monitor as a device. If your monitor came with an installation disk, you can use that. Once it is installed , it will show up in the Devices and Printers of the control panel.

It will allow you to install color profiles for your monitor. This can dramatically improve the monitor display.

That is also one of the problems i'm facing. The monitor's included disc is virtually useless. It just contains some manuals so I downloaded a driver from acer but it shows an error: "The third-party INF does not contain digital signature information".

Actually, I have already downloaded a driver for the monitor from Acer but when I tried the "Have Disk" method to install, it shows the error "The third-party INF does not contain digital signature information". If I managed to install this driver, do you think it would fix the generic monitor issue?

Okay, I'll try that when I get home. I'll update this thread if ever it works or if I find another solution that works.

Hi, Just an update. I already got around to installing the drivers by Shift restarting my PC and disabling the digital signature requirement. A new problem would be that although my monitor is recognized in device manager, when I change resolution in windows, it says: "Display Device on: VGA" and not my monitor.

Thanks! I've already updated the drivers before making the fix. So the "Display Device on: VGA" won't cause any trouble?

Not if you use the Nvidia control Panel.

You can try different cables or VGA adapter. There were quite a few instances of your "Display Device on: VGA". But apart from getting a better monitor there weren't many solutions. Most solutions pointed to the VGA cable.

I don't think it's the cable since it works flawlessly with the IGP. It could be the adapter though but I'll just tinker with the Nvidia control panel and see if I can get better results. thanks!
