My computer will not start up without this stick of ram when i have abrand new stick of ram in it when i take out the old one

I'm guessing an older mobo, 775, 1156, 1366 or so and the 'new' stick is a modern DDR3 using high density memory chips, and you prob need a low density stick like the GSkill NT series of value DRAM. If you let us know mobo, CPU and current model of DRAM we'll know more
