Hello there ! I use Windows 7 on a 1tb western digital drive . I installed Windows 10 on a usb stick . Booted from it and saw my 1tb drive . Now I want to install a clean copy . I try to format it and I get a error: 0x8004242d . But I can't even still download windows on the drive . I tried a different hard drive . Was able to format junk on it but couldn't install Windows on it ! If someone can answer this question , then your a expert . Thank you . I've tried everything

Hey there, Mac070!

I'm really sorry to hear about your issues with the WD HDD! :( I'd strongly recommend you to plug it in another computer and check its health and SMART status using WD's Data LifeGuard Diagnostics for Windows. Running the QUICK and EXTENDED tests will help us determine if there's anything wrong with it.
If you don't have the means to plug it in another computer, I'd suggest you to use the same utility but for DOS (it will let you test the drive without booting into any OS).
You can find the available WD Software for your hard drive here: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=LUvWVq

Another reason for this error could be a corrupted installation of Windows 7, so I'd suggest you to create a new bootable USB/CD drive following the MS guidelines: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/clean-install

Hope this helps. Keep me posted.

Yah the hard drive runs fine. I have Windows 7 is installed and runs great on that same hard drive . Now I installed a usb bootable stick and hit custom install . I ser my drive but it won't let me format it ! Or install Windows on it .

Hey there again, Mac070!

I'd recommend you to try reformatting the HDD from another computer and see if that will help the Windows Installation media recognize it properly. If you have more than one HDD connected to the SATA ports at the time of the installation, it could also cause such issues. Make sure you have only this drive connected to the motherboard until Windows is successfully installed onto it.
I'd suggest you to create the bootable USB again, a damaged Windows installation could also be the source of the issue.

Keep us posted! :)
