So,

This is my first real rig, and I've been wanting a true gaming computer for over 10 years...

I finally had the opportunity to buy some GREAT items to build this comp, but my frame rate is getting destroyed for random and unobvious reasons.

I'm running games like;

Smite - 60 FPS in spawn and when no abilities are being used, 22 - 45 fps when abilities / team fights happen (Ultra Graphics)

Planet Side 2 - Very rarely is smooth....

StarWars BattleFront - Glitchy and sometimes max fps, usually 30 - 40 fps

PLEASE HELP THIS SHOULD NOT BE HAPPENING, my room mates laptop alienware that's 2 years old and only has a 2g graphics card has perfect FPS on all these games.. it's depressing.

I also have watercooling, just fyi.

You could try lowering your desktop resolution. Back in 2000 the normal desktop screen size was 1024X768 So try that setting for a while and also make sure in game the screen size is also 1024x768. Many things in a pc can affect a games performance. You gotta think like doctor and search every avenue.

Sometimes even placing the video card in a different PCI-E slot can make a world of difference. bad luck if you only have one slot of pci-e.

May want to turn graphics down a hair. I have an FX 8120 overclocked to 4.2ghz, and a now older radeon 7950(equivalent is the r9 380). Seems like you should be doing better at 1080p. I run everything at 1080 usually on high settings and it plays great.

What are temps like? Could anything be throttling due to heat?

Yep great question! Also a mistake can be building the perfect pc but using a $30 case for it can kill performance also(stores in heat)

First of all, install a temperature monitor and post your result, when you experience fps drops and during heavy load.

Then it looks like you have 2 monitors running. If that is true, it could definetely cause FPS drops

OS: Windows 8.1 64-bit
CPU: FX-6350
RAM: 16 GB (4 sticks of 4 GB) 1600 Mhz 11/11/11/28
GPU: R9 390
Motherboard?
PSU?

PS. update to windows 10 and all drivers as well, would be recommended.

I've got a huge brand new case, same specs and I've taken screen shots in smite now.

I get 150fps in spawn, 90fps + while the game is happening, and then fps shoots down to 40, 30, and even 18 almost like it's getting attacked.

My utilization tanks, the processors are NOT getting overloaded, it's like it has less to do, but my frame rate dies??? WTF is going on here??

I tried flashing my bios following my manufactures website tutorial and instructions and it BRICKED MY MOTHERBOARD.

The customer support told me "oh we never recommend people to follow out website, send it in and well give you a new one in 3 - 5 weeks"

Meanwhile I'm in Turkey living/working abroad as I run a digital business. So I went and bought a brand new mobo and new ram, not only fixed my problem, made it better than I was hoping for.

Thank you for following up with me. I took the suggestions here to address the ram and mobo with new parts. Problem sovled - maxing out at 150 fps and worst case I get like 65 fps on heavy instances.

FANSTASTIC.

That's very interesting. I'm running an msi 970 gaming mobo with vengeance 2400 ddr3 ram.

In the last month of running these two new parts, I've only frozen 4 or 5 times, 3 times due to Starwars battlefront, another few from overloading my computer with multiple 4k videos on premier pro, photoshop, and like 80 tabs on 3 browsers open. lol... All in all, I'm very happy with where I'm at now.
