Today was my first venture into the overclocking world... and its not quite as smooth as I would hope :p

My cpu is a 3.3 ghz i7 5820. My h20 cooler is a corsair h100i.

Using LinX I was able to get a stable overclock of 4.3 ghz at 1.239 volts with a max temperature of 80 *C. I then tested my CPU in AIDA64 for an hour and got stable readings with a constant temperature of 70 *C.

When I attempted to test the over clock with prime95, that's when I started running into problems. Moment after turning on the torture test my CPU soared to 90*C. I cranked up my fans to max and seconds after my CPU settled back down to 80-84 *C. About 5 minutes later my system blue screen on me.

My main concern is I don't know what it means. Or what the best course of action is next.
I don't want to damage my machine by running stress tests where temperatures reach 80-90 *C.

You're help is most appreciated!

Solution
What version of prime95 are you using, as for stress testing, you shouldn't be using a version beyond 27.0, as that version is the last one which doesn't go and use the AVX instruction set and produce extra heat

THANK YOU! :D You are a life saver.

It turns out I was using 28.8... and it caused ALOT of issues. I switched to 26.6 and ran the program for 20 minuets with no problems.

One final follow up for you Nuckles_56: Does the newer versions of Prime 95 also cause your CPU need unrealistic amount of voltage? Using the 28.8 version the only way I could get it stable for more than 10 min. was to to drop the multiplayer to 40 and increase voltage to 1.2 0_o. b Currently (with 26.6) I was able to run it for much longer at higher multipliers with less voltage.

Thanks. Regardless I'm glad it was a prime issue. I actually did more reading on the newer versions of Prime95 and it seems that there are several people that struggle to run 18.8 prime95 on even stock speeds 0_o.
