I want to apologize in advance for the long post.

I've been having some problems recently with my laptops internet connection. For some reason I can only connect to the internet if my VPN is activated (btw im using IPVanish).
I have a desktop, Xbox and another laptop that all connect to the internet fine but for some reason my laptop has this problem. When I open Google Chrome and try to go on a website it gives me an error sayin that i was unable to connect to the internet. The second I connect to my VPN everything works just fine The strange thing, however, is that when i connect with this laptop at a hotel or someone elses wi-fi it works fine.
My friend suggested formatting my PC as there might be a corrupted file but before trying that i wanted to hear your suggestions?
Thank You

Exactly the same problem with laptop and IPVanish. It only started just now when I came home and tried to get on the wifi. It was working perfectly a few days ago. Everyone else's connections appear to be fine. Only me using IPVanish.

Tried lots of ipconfig flushing and renewing etc etc but so far no joy. :(

OK, fixed it, but not exactly sure what happened.

I'd started using openDNS for filtering (boys of that age!) and the home router's DNS is set to their IP's. But I found in my adapter setting on TCP IPv4 the DNS addresses were totally different. Not sure why, maybe I had changed them when fiddling around with openDNS and attempted to "get around" their addresses. (My kids would be up to trying that no problem!)

Anyway, changed it to Obtain DNS address automatically, went back and changed router's DNS addresses back to openDNS again (had to use my ISP's to get onto internet without IPVanish!) and BINGO!

All working again. Hope there's a clue in there for your situation. :)

btw I would not reformat a drive over an issue like this!

I ran into a similar issue when I first began using IPVanish. When you connect to one of the IPVanish servers, it automatically updates your IPv4 DNS servers. For example, I use OpenVPN so my IPv4 DNS server settings change from "Obtain DNS server address automatically" to 198.18.0.3 and 198.18.0.4.

The problem arises when IPVanish is not properly shutdown or crashes, as it does not change your IPv4 DNS settings back to the original values (settings to be used when not connected to IPVanish). It can be annoying but you should just be able to manually change your DNS settings back to obtain automatically (Network and Sharing Center > Change adapter settings > Properties of applicable adapter > Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP / IPv4) > Properties > Obtain DNS server address manually)

That was exceptionally helpful, thank you. I had the same issue with IPVanish on my Mac, and your suggestion allowed me to fix it.

First of all, quit IPVanish. Force Quit if you have to, but make sure that it is NOT running.

Click on the Apple symbol at the top left. Go down to System Preferences. Go down to the third row and click on the grey ball that says "Network" underneath it. Make sure that the Wi-Fi option is highlighted in the left of the window and that your normal network/router name is listed under Network Name near the middle of the main window. Click on Advanced at the bottom of that box. Click on the DNS header button and then delete everything in the left hand window - normally a list of numbers like xxx.xx.x.x. It will automatically repopulate with your own router information. Click OK.

Close all open windows and programs, then restart. Everything should work normally now.

Hi,
I tried the solution but when i got to the DNS, there were no numbers found for me to delete. Have restarted my macbook yet still can't connect to any wifi.

This worked for me along with clearing out my IPv4 IP and grabbing a fresh one! I had some custom Google DNS IP's setup so I could try and grab DNS info from Google over my own ISP: for some reason my VPN (ProXPN) was duplicating the DNS entries: I deleted all listings, I then set my IPv4 to be "Using DHCP with manual address...", entered in an address, hit apply, then changed it back to "Using DHCP", so it would grab one automatically, and that seemed to remedy things. It may have been an issue with my DNS info along with a bad IPv4 IP -- all likely due to my VPN service as well :)

In your WiFi "Advanced" settings, on the TCP/IP Tab, are you seeing that you're getting a valid IPv4 IP? Try clicking on the drop down and selecting, "Using DHCP with manual address" and enter one manually, like: 192.168.1.20, hit apply, then go back to the drop-down and select 'Using DHCP" (this should configure your IPv4 IP automatically) -- hit Apply again. Now go back and see if your IPv4 IP is displaying, and if so, try your connection again....I cleared my DNS entires, but until I set a manual IPv4 and then set it back to auto, it wasn't working. Other posters are right that the IPv4 settings are getting screwed up from the VPN services. Resetting everything in that regard seems to fix things.
