I am using a headset with separate microphone and speaker plugs. I bought a splitter as my laptop only has one jack. It worked the first time I tried it but ever since I unplugged it the first time, only the speaker part of the headset works. I have tested the headset since on other devices and it works fine. Any advice?

You need a headset adapter and not an headphone splitter. A splitter allows you to use 1 headphone jack with two headphones.
