I found a Corsair RM850 on kijiji for $80. I have had great luck with kijiji but I know people say PSUs are best bought new. The seller said it was 6 months old and he just has to sell his rig due to financial problems (which I can tell is true because I have looked at his other posts). I need a PSU upgrade and could only afford a 550-600 if I buy new so I would definitely prefer this one, especially due to the 80 plus gold certification. Could anyone tell me if it is a good idea to buy this? Also what should I look for when he brings it by to try out? Is there anything I should test other than running it for a little while?

80+ Gold is an indicator of efficiency and has nothing to do with the quality of the unit at all. Corsair power supplies themselves are a mixed bag of good units and poorly made units, making it difficult to recommend the brand at all when there are better options available. Buying a used PSU is not a great idea to begin with. If the unit is not damaged in any way there's a chance it will work fine. So, examine it for drop damage. Smell for signs of burnt electrical parts. If you shake it does it rattle as if parts are moving around loose? Aside from that, using it is the only way to tell if it's ok. You can check the voltages after it's installed. Get the original receipt for warranty purposes. If that's not possible I would not...
