I have a locked Skylake i5-6500 for a first-time build and I'm trying to figure out if the i5-6500 can effectively use DDR4 RAM over 2133 if put it in a Z170 motherboard.
Intel claims the CPU is only rated for DDR4-1866/2133. Is this a hard limit set by the CPU or just what Intel has rated the CPU for? Is this Intel saying the i5-6500 is only guaranteed for speeds up to 2133mhz (but still it might go higher) or is this Intel saying it is a hard limit in the processor that only allows RAM to go up to 2133mhz?
For example, if I put the i5-6500 in a Z170 mobo with DDR4-2660 will the RAM just go up to 2133mhz, or will it automatically try to use the full 2660mhz. Will it succeed? If not, is there something I could change to allow an i5-6500 system to use over 2133mhz RAM. Would this be some how considered OCing and void the Intel warranty?
To use an analogy: If the i5-6500 is a car, is Intel saying they installed a limiter that will stop the i5-6500 from going over 2133 kilometers per hour even if I put premium DDR4-2660 gasoline in the tank?
Is Intel saying that the i5-6500 is only rated for max 2133 km/h, but if put DDR-2660 gasoline in the tank and stomp on the gas who knows how fast I might really go?
If there is a limiter, is there anyway to remove it? Would this void the warranty?
I'm overexplaining because I've gotten a lot of vague and conflicting information about this. So, please be as specific as possible in your answer. Thanks.
