Hello,

a friend recently gave me 4 internal hdd's he used in his office and i am interested in making them external with an enclosure(cheap solution for getting an external).
However he mentioned one of them was at 70% health (2,5") and he isnt sure about the working condition of the other 3 (3,5") . What can i do to check them , what things should i consider and in the end how can i know if it is really worth making such a "conversion" (i found enclosures for as low as 4$ on ebay)

Solution
You can check the health by installing them and running the manufacturer's utility like Sea Tools or Data Lifeguard. You could also run chdsk on them in Windows. Look for and enclosure with good reviews, some are junk. Another option is to get a USB to SATA/IDE adapter to use and test the drives with.
