Salvage Old PC Parts

Hi,

my rig is now five years old and I would like to build a new one. However, back in the day the parts were really quite premium and I'd hate to just sell the whole thing on ebay. I would appreciate some feedback on which parts might still be useful right now. My setup is:

i7 950
Dual Palit GTX 580 3GB
6GB Corsair Dominator GT 1600
Asus Rampage III Extreme
Corsair AX 1200 PSU
Corsair F120 120GB System SSD
Dual Caviar Black 1TB in Raid0 for applications
Caviar Green 2TB for storage
Coolermaster HAF X case

First off, I intend to go for a cheaper build this time around - in the realm of 1200 dollars.

Basically I'm wondering whether it's a good idea to keep the PSU around, because I can't imagine huge advances have been made in PSU tech. Obviously CPU, memory, and mobo have to go. Storage wise I'm thinking toss the SSD for a bigger, faster one and keep the storage drives - again I'm presuming advances in mechanical HDDs have been minimal. Lastly, the case has served me well, but it is really huge and I probably won't go SLI again this time around. I also don't like the fact that it's a real dust magnet with all the fans. The fact that I won't go SLI is probably also relevant to keeping the PSU, given that I won't be close to using all its power.

I am really attached to this thing, so I am relying on your objective judgement to tell me if there is any merit to keeping aforementioned parts around.

Thank you,
Mark

If you can't play games like you want, a GPU upgrade makes sense. It can be transferred to the new build later. The case and PSU should be good for quite some time.

Thanks for the reply!

Really? I'd have thought five years was a long time in the computing world. How long do you wait in between upgrades?

Guess I should really take a look at the benefits first. Right now there are a few games that I can't run well at 2560*1440, so that's why I thought it would be time to upgrade. So you'd stick with psu and case?

Keep what You have. Lateral upgrades from old, high-end to new, mid-range hardware are always disappointing.

Upgrade the RAM, possibly replacing what You have to get lower latency. 24GB (3x 8 GB or 6x 4 GB) of DDR3 is cheap.
