Hello everyone!

I need some assistance in choosing a CPU upgrade from my current i7 930 which I have overclocked to 3.6ghz.

My choices are either to get an i5 (4690k or *6600k but the recent *CPU bending issue may cause me to not consider Skylake), i7 (4790k or *6700k) or wait for AMD's Zen next year.

With AMD's Zen coming out late next year poses another issue for me as I finished a College level program a year and a half ago whereby I received some free legit operating systems from Microsoft and apparently I have two years from that point to use and activate them. So I'd like to take advantage of a free OS that I can then upgrade to Win 10 before the Win 10 free upgrade off expires.

So what do you guys think would be the best course of action if any action?

Thanks again! :)

While anything is possible, I cannot see AMD making a leap from where they are now to past Skylake in a single jump. Zen may allow 12 core processors to be built efficiently that will outperform Intel in some tasks, but in that situation, the software to support this or take advantage of this does not generally exist.

Zen needs to keep AMD competitive at up to the mid-range and if they could cannibalize the Haswell market, that would be a good thing, so Haswell-equivalent performance at the same or cheaper price with a few advantages thown in will be enough.

First question is: How frustrated / limited do you feel with your existing system? If the answer is "not very", then waiting for Zen or even Skylake-Refresh might make sense. If the answer is "A LOT!!!" time to go now. Haswell will be relevant for years, just like the i7 930 remained relevant for years.
