Fresh Install of Windows 7 won't update

I just installed windows 7 and a new HDD on an old computer and I can't get windows update to detect any updates. It ran for around 3 hours and it still said "Checking for Updates." Any ideas on how to fix it? thanks in advance.

Hello... Have you activated the Windows OS yet? this should be done first before updates.

Hello... Sometimes the website is bogged down... just stop it and try again another time... Find something else to Load on your computer. B )

Hi
Is that win 7 or win 7 with service pack 1 ?
Have you added motherboard & graphic drivers yet?

If win 7 without sp 1 leave over night
Or get sp 1 download on another pc and run that update before downloading rest of updates
Leave it running over night if necessary
Ms win fixit can check for corrupted windows or Microsoft updates services on your pc if they are broken

Hello... Your system info screen should say "SP1" Yes... this should be the first upgrade/Update to get if your install media was not.

Hello... Good... I've never waited that long for any update... I would typically try another time for better results... you need to DL a "Validation" first before the UPDATE online will work too.

Okay, here is my update:
It did start updating but it has been stuck on the Security Update for Windows 7 (KB2972280). I am now running the standalone updater for that update. IF anyone has another idea, please let me know.

A new update: I restarted my PC and it updated w/o booting to desktop so all of the updates are done now

Are you having any other Internet related issues (slow download speed, youtube buffering/lagging etc.)

It could be a network/firewall issue. What anti-virus/firewall are you running?

I know this thread is old... but I was having the same problem and found a fix and thought I'd share. I was getting the 8007000e error, eventually. This indicated that my computer was having trouble communicating with the microsoft update server. I suspect it's because by this point there are hundreds of updates.

I downloaded and installed the .net 3.5 and 4.0 framework.
I then installed the Windows 7 Update update-- to 7.6 (searched "windows 7 update for windows update).
Then: kb 3102810, and finally kb 3050265

This combination seems to allow a new Win 7 SP 1 install to communicate with the windows update server without problems.
