Q6600 is cheap because it's slow, and power hungry. If you decide that's best for you try for a Q6600 SLACR, This is the G0 stepping and draws less power so it runs a little cooler. It was a favorite of overclockers a few years back. Personally I'd go for a faster $40 chip and maybe be able to put off replacing the computer a little longer. But I don't know your situation. If your applications don't use 4 cores there would be no improvement, and a fast dual core would work better for you. Best of course would be a fast Quad which can handle anything.
