Still no luck... what are the chances I have damaged the motherboard in the process of all my troubleshooting? Again, new to this and just wondering how easy it is to do serious damage to the MB. Thanks.

If you were careful enough in the process of troubleshooting, it will be completely fine. But hey, it didn't work straight out the box anyway. So really it would seem you got a duff component on your hands. If you can verify this by means of using a different motherboard from a friend (or drop into a PC shop and explain your situation) this could shed some light on the matter. Another option would be to return the board as faulty, and as Supahos correctly said, get yourself a Z97 chipset unit seeing as you have a K series CPU.

Your boards BIOS need to be version F3 or later to support the i7 4790K, but that BIOS was released back in June 2014. As you have just newly received the board, it should have been manufactured with the lasted BIOS at that date. So there is a chance (and it happened to me) that it could just be in need of a BIOS update. I bought an MSI board and it had the same symptoms as you once, after a bit of investigating it turned out the "newly bought" board was almost 2 years old. Resulting in the BIOS being the very first version, -which didn't support newer processors. Have a look into this. The Serial number of the motherboard will often contain the manufacture date. After a quick google found this: http://forums.tweaktown.com/gigabyte/43875-about-manufactured-data-gigabytes-motherboard.html it might help you find the date.
