How Do I overclock RAM? (Step by step, please)

I recently got 24Gb 2000MHz DDR3 RAM, but it's running at 1866MHz (with XMP enabled). I read that I have to overclock my RAM in order to get the speeds up to 2000MHz. I tried this myself, being somewhat familiar with overclocking and I was not able to do it. I increased the gear ratio to x1.25. When I selected the 1600MHz XMB profile, my ram would then be running at 2000MHz. At the same time though, my CPU (i7 3820) would be running at 4.75GHz and I was afraid that this would cause overheating issues. So, I downclocked the CPU to 32 frequency instead of 36. When I saved the settings, my computer crashed and wouldn't boot up so I had to do a CMOS reset. I then read that I have to overvolt the RAM, so I overvolted to 1.6 instead of 1.5. I saved the settings again, and the computer crashed and I had to do a CMOS reset again. My default voltage is 1.5 on auto, so I don't know why I would have to increase the voltage if it's on auto. Would anyone be able to let me know exactly how to overclock my RAM (details are very much appreciated). I don't want to be crashing my computer constantly again.

Thank you so much!

I just upgraded from 1866MHz RAM to 2000MHz RAM. Was it essentially worthless?

Basically yes. it was worthless.
