Slow internet speeds on one computer, but not other.

Hi all,

So, recently I purchased a dual-band wireless dongle to replace my old Wi-Fi card. I downloaded the software etc., and tested it on my PC. The speeds were awful, maximum 1mb/s down, but strangely, I'll get around 7 mb/s up. My download/upload speeds are normally far higher than that, so I figured it was a problem with my PC rather than my connection. I then decided to test the exact same dongle on my laptop, which reached 35mb/s down and about 10mb/s up. They were tested at the same range from the router, so it is nothing to do with distance. I have hard reset the router and changed channel, neither of which have helped. Any help on my issue would be greatly appreciated as I am seriously confused by it.

Wireless dongle - Asus WN-160N

Thanks
- Matthew.

Is the PC a desktop and sitting on the floor while the laptop is up on a desk or table?

Use a USB extension cable on the desktop to raise the wireless dongle up to at least desktop or higher level.

Not so much a matter of distance sometimes as it is a matter of wireless path and interference. Does not take much to slow performance.

The PC is on top of my desk, along with my laptop. I even switched them around, putting the desktop where the laptop was and vice versa, and nothing. Thanks for the reply.

Did you set up any QoS on the router where it may still be "favoring" the old wifi card versus the new?

Also what router do you have? You may need to go into the dongle's settings and force it to match what the router is set for versus "auto", "auto-negoiate", etc. If the devices are from different manufacturer's they may not be playing well together.
