Hello everybody, for some reason every time I encode HD videos using Adobe Media Encoder CS6 my CPU temps go way to high (90c) I have to stop the encoding immediately, I have tried different encoding softwares (Handbrake, TEncoder, AVS Converter..etc) but I get the same results.. is my CPU or Heatsink defective? these are my PC specs

CPU - Intel i7-4790k with stock heatsink (NOT OVERCLOCKED)
MOBO - Gigabyte GA-Z97-HD3 Rev.2.0
RAM - G.Skill Ripjaws X 16GB (2X8) DDR3 1600
GPU - XFX R9 280X DD
PSU - EVGA 550W
Im using Speccy as temp reference

An i5-4460 was installed in this motherboard before, but I removed the i5 along with the thermal paste used the Artic Silver thermal material remover and surface purifier, BUT I didn't apply any thermal paste since I saw that the i7-4790K heatsink came with thermal paste already, Am I supposed to apply extra thermal paste even when the heatsink came with thermal paste? or what other factors could be causing this? thanks

Take off the i7 stock heatsink, remove the thermal paste it came pre-applied with, and apply arctic silver in a dot. (I'm assuming you still have some left over, if you don't have any left over you should get some more, it's good stuff.).The stock thermal paste is much worse quality than arctic silver and you will notice significantly lower temps.

thanks for the quick response, so the CPU and heatsink are not defective right? those are normal temps under video encoding workload? I do have the arctic silver 5 thermal paste.. I normally apply thermal paste about a size of a pea is that amount ok?

What is your idle temperature?
I would expect it to be 10-15c. over ambient if the cooler was installed correctly.

Installing the stock cooler can be tricky.
The 3 grey strips on the cooler is all you need.
Check the back of the motherboard to see that all 4 pushpins are through the motherboard and locked.
If you nudge the cooler, it should not wiggle.

Lastly, 90c. is high, but not to worry.
The cpu will downclock or slow down to protect itself if it gets too hot.
That is at about 100c.

why not the cooler master hyper212 evo its 25$ with 83 cfm
I currently own one and i have my i7-4790k overclocked at 4.7 ghz with temps at 70c

Video editing can be pretty cpu intensive. Thermal throttling should be a last resort or last line of defense rather than relying on it. For sustained heavy loads like that an aftermarket cooler may be a better choice. Something like a 212 evo or cryorig h7 as a starting point, both good budget coolers. Nothing wrong with going bigger/higher performance but wouldn't bother with coolers that perform much less than either of those.

It would be preferable to keep temps closer to 70-75c if possible, of course less is always better when possible. Ambient temps will have a direct effect on cooling, what sort of room temps do you have? The previous i5 would tend to run cooler, it's clocked much slower and lack hyper threading which also increases temps some under full/heavy sustained load like encoding/editing.

Thank you all for your help.. I think I've found the problem for this overheating issue.. one of them might me the case.. I have a Midtower that barely fits all the components inside.. I had to cut and remove my hard drive bay bracket in order for my XFX R9 GPU to fit.. Not to mention my R9 also gets hot and makes the inside of the case worst.. also a lot of cables on the way preventing air flow.. so I have the CPU on heavy workflow and GPU also running hot, cables on the way and the stock heatsink doing the best it can to keep the CPU cool inside that little furnace oven.. Forgot to mention that my midtower was under my desk where almost no air flows thru there.. I noticed when I felt hot air blowing thru my leg.. So I did a test.. I bought a open bench case and put it on TOP of my desk where I have a nice AC duct on top of my head.. and now my idle temps are 25-30c .. and video encoding temps 75-80c with the stock heatsink.. Im planning on buying a better heatsink cooler anyway to see if temps drop more..

The main issue I have with the stock cooler is the noise it makes under load. The 92mm fan can get noisy.
If that bothers you, you can replace it with a tower type cooler with a 120mm fan.
Cryorig H7 or cm hyper212 are about $30.

Too much thermal paste can act as an insulator.
The job of the paste is to fill in microscopic air pockets in the mating surfaces.
The paste itself is not a great heat conductor, but it is better than air.
I think in terms more like a grain of rice.
It is hard to use too little.
The paste will spread out under heat and pressure.

The R9 cards run hot, and the fan type coolers dump the heat into the case.
You do need a good case for them.
My criteria for a good cooling case would be two front 120mm or 140mm intake fans behind a washable filter.
That gives you positive pressure where all intake air is filtered and will keep your case cleaner.
Two 120mm intake fans are about the equivalent of the gpu intake and the cpu intake coolers so that should be sufficient.
I like 140mm fans better, they provide more air at lower rpm so they are quieter.
My suggestion might be the Silverstone PS-11B

I would buy two 140mm fans for the front as intakes.
Relocate the supplied 120mm fan to the rear as exhaust.
Do not add more exhaust fans since that will draw in unfiltered air from other openings.

So do you think is a bad idea to use the open case? its this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811353002&cm_re=bench_case-_-11-353-002-_-Product
temps are better now.. maybe the AC duct on the ceiling is making the temps go lower? what do you think?
