Hello guys,
I have a lga1156 motherboard & need to upgrade my i3 530.
Should i go for the i5 680:4mb cache,3.6 dual core,32nm or i7 870:8mb cache 2.93 quad core,45nm? I use it for gaming

Thanks in advance

Solution
Definitely get the i7. The i5 680 is a dual core with hyperthreading just like your i3, with the only real advantage being Turbo Boost and higher stock clock speed. The i5 680 wouldn't be a worthwhile upgrade over what you currently have. On an architecture that old you're going to want more than 2 cores with hyperthreading.

The die shrink between Nahalem and Westmere did not produce any really significant performance gains, it only allowed higher core counts on LGA 1366, with the i7 975, 980x and 990x being hexacore chips, and allowed room on the die for integrated graphics on the Clarkdale CPUs on LGA 1156. The integrated graphics aren't going to do you any good for gaming, so that's not really an advantage for you. Even with the higher lithography, you're still better off with the 2 additional cores that the i7 860 offers. If you can't overclock, I would suggest maybe looking for the i7 870 or 880, which are clocked higher and would help performance in games.

i7 is just a way stronger cpu overall, has 4 more threads (8vs4) 2 more cores, and believe me... you really need a quad core cpu at this time. A better passmark score and a better geekbench 2 (64-bit) score. I hope this helped
