Can I use two 6pin to 8 pin power adapters for my new MSI GTX 980 from an old 850w PSU?

I have a gaming rig I built 6 years ago and have been swapping out parts. The only thing that has stayed the same is my 850w PSU from Thermaltake which uses 6pins. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817153043

I didn't realize the 980 requires 8 pin but I did see it came with an adapter. Can I go to Frys and pick up another adapter and use my two 6 pins?? BTW I currently use a 580...

If what you are asking is that whether a 2x6 pin to 2x8 pin adapter is fine, then it isn't. This is because the two extra pins on the 8-pin give it more power than a 6-pin. A better solution would be 2x6 pin to 1x8 pin adapter, as it removes the 6-pin as a bottleneck for the power.

yes that's what I mean. My GPU came with 1 6 to 8 pin adapter and since the card requires two 8 pins. I can just buy another 6 to 8 pin adapter right?

You should check if the power suply's power rails are up to the task (enough amperage (A)).

I don't understand why the power supply would come with that adapter, but if it did then I would say to be safe, just ignore it. Basically you would be having two useless pins and there would be no point in even using the adapter. Look for 2x Molex to 1x 8-pin adapters. They are more common and should work. Most graphics cards these days come with one of these adapters.
