Will Noctua U14S block RAM slots on ASUS Z170-P?

Hello.

Link to Noctua (with dimensions): http://noctua.at/en/products/cpu-cooler-retail/nh-u14s.html#.VmWcn7iLRhF

Motherboard: https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Z170-P/specifications/

Noctua U14S in 78 mm in width if we look from top to bottom on motherboard. From what i can see, U14S with fan installed will come EXTREMELY close to first RAM slot, potentially blocking it. I tryed to measure relative distances using photos on interent, and it looks like there is 1 mm of free space between end of fan and 1st RAM slot.

My photo based calculations are not exactly reliable, so i would like to hear people opinion about this.

Just in case, RAM is Corsair Vengeance LPX (specifications: http://www.cclonline.com/content/images/pdf/CMK8GX4M2B3000C15.pdf ) height of 1 block is 33.5mm, it will not fit under U14S fan, that allows only 25 mm of free space under it. The options to move fan upwards by ~8mm is avaliable i guess.

Yes, i red the news. Seems there is no consensus yet. Some people say, that damaging may occured during transporting, sound reasonable. Intel also says that Skylakes can endure just like previous generations processors.

But yeah, this is troubling anyways.

Karsten, do you think this is a risk to buy such cooler in light of recent news? I was thinking about getting a "little brother" - U12S (http://noctua.at/en/products/cpu-cooler-retail/nh-u12s.html#.VmWcg7iLRhF) that is 755gramms. I know for sure it would not block anything, but it gives less room for OC, compared to U14S.

It may be still enought for me, i want to OC 6700k for something like 4.6Hz, like most people do, nothing extreme. So maybe U12S will work just fine?

I prefer to err to the side of caution. But, for the past 5 years or so I've only been building with AIO water coolers. Even then I started getting a bit worried about the wight and size of air coolers hanging off the motherboard and someone bumping or carelessly moving the computer around.

I have not in all the years and in many builds have an issue with noise or leakage, so I can't recommend air coolers anymore. In most builds I use either the stock Intel AIO liquid cooler or the NZXT single-fan 140 mm cooler. I had one buld with a Corsair and I was not really happy with that.

Sorry, I probably only answer your questions obliquely.

@STRONG_SMASH: I'm about to build a new rig and have the same question as you. In the odd chance you might still be following this thread, I wonder if you ended up using the NH-U14S on this board and whether the 1st RAM slot is indeed blocked?

I was planning to use G.Skill memory with a heatspreader; they're even 42 mm high and I'd like to be able to use the 1st RAM slot.
