Hello
Recently I bought a 54 mm expresscard usb 3.0 http://www.ebay.com/itm/131565873840?_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT for my dell latitude E6420. It works fine when I plug usb stick 3.0, but when I connect 2.5'' external hard drive, it disconnects again after a while or when I try to copy data.
When I plug in the hdd in a 2.0 port it works well. Maybe the express card doesn't support external drives without external power supply?
The things I've done:
I've tried several drivers and also the latest one for fl1100 chipset.
I've changed the usb settings at the power option.
I've updated firmware for my Hitachi hdd.
So is there any solution or the problem is with the expresscard?

Hey there, rig2205.

Having in mind the drive works fine when connected directly to one of the laptop's USB ports, it really sounds like the issue is connected to the express card. When you say that you've tried several drivers, do you mean those for the express card as well, as you've mentioned the chipset driver?
You could always download the HDD manufacturer's diagnostics tool and test the drive for error, just to make sure that everything is fine and test it with a different USB cable (preferably shorter than 12"), to see if there's any difference (even though it works OK with this cable and a USB 2.0 port). I'd recommend that you try the drive with a different USB 3.0 port as well (not one of those on the express card), to see if the issue reoccurs.
Basically, if it turns out that the drive has no faults whatsoever, I'd suggest that you contact the express card manufacturer's customer support and ask for assistance and if there's any version of their drivers which might be helpful in your case. In some cases the latest driver is not necessarily the best option.

Hope that helps. Please let me know how everything goes.

I tried everything you advised me Boogieman_WD, but nothing worked. I tried a new 2.5'' case usb 3.0 and worked well. Seems like the problem was not of the expresscard but of the hard drive case.
