Hello people of the tom's hardware forum.

Today I have a question that might help me and be a solution for many people. There is always many people wanting to host from their home and then they usually get criticized for the idea. Would it be a good idea to buy a mini 512mb server from some hosting company and use it as a proxy and connect the proxy to your home server so no one can dos or ddos your home server and only the proxy is hit? I also have two internet connections and I could possibly have a few more in other locations. And I will have two different servers. The components are an intel Xeon Quad-Core E3-1220V2 clocked at 3.10GHz and 16 gigs of ram(And a junky gt 610 to get graphics). And I'm planning on getting a 32gb server for the faster of of the two networks. I understand there can be a little latency and if I pick a hosting company within a reasonable distance from me, will this be a good idea? (My uplink for the fastest connection is 5 megabits and my second uplink connection is a 3 megabit connection.) (I am also planning on this server to be able to hold a max of 500 players and I don't think I would make the player count any bigger)

Hi, i honestly believe that there isn't any reason to get a proxy computer. It would take many, many computers all working together to successfully DOS attack a server. Also, all routers these days have good DOS protection so there isn't any need to worry. Plus, why would someone want to DOS you? Most cases of DOS attacks are on websites or big companies file servers. SO i just think it would be a waste of money to get a second PC just for that. Anyway, enjoy your Minecraft server! :)

No I have definitely been ddossed because people thinks it's funny and I guess it could be a trend of minecraft. People buy boosters for $5 then take down the server. I can get a server for $3 monthly and turn it into a proxy.

Using it as a proxy like that wont really be a good idea. Poor latency and performance overall.
Honestly, buy a host. Any quality one you pay more than 5 dollars for will have a decent level of protection against attack, and if it does go down its the job of the host to fix it. If you had it as a proxy and it came under attack your server would still go down, how would you route it to players if the proxy is under attack?

Well if I were to keep latency low would it be a good idea? And also I would like to maintain my hardware. I would pay for the server once and upgrade it as I go. And After I would stop using it for a minecraft server I could use it as a nas machine or there is many different solutions.
