I have C and D. C is almost full when extracting a big archive so I want to make more room in it.

Got a 1tb WD and my C drive has just 100gb. I try with Disk manager of my win7 but I cant click extend volume. Do I need to shrink D first? Does this disk manager method work properly? dont want to lose files or mess up how my programs work and I have 180gb left on D. I want to give at least 50gb more to C.

You cannot do this wo the assistance of a third-party$ software, the grandaddy of these is of course Partition Magic. HOWEVER your drive is VERY FULL, I cannot guarantee you the amount of free space available is acceptable even to PM. To do its job, it needs scratch space to move stuff around.

Do you have a similar sized external backup drive? if not, this maybe a good time go get one. Then you can just (1)backup your D:, (2)Delete it, (3)Extend C:, (4)Re-create D: with now shrinked partition size, (5)restore from backup. Wo needing to buy PM.
