Hi guys,

I'm having a really hard time choosing a motherboard. I'm building my own PC and this is the last part I need to order.

The build goes as follows:

  • ■ Intel Core i7-4790K
    ■ NZXT Kraken X61
    ■ Avexir Core Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-2400
    ■ Samsung 850 EVO-Series 250GB 2.5" SSD
    ■ Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive
    ■ EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Ti 6GB HYBRID Video Card
    ■ EVGA Supernova G2 750W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply
    ■ NZXT Noctis 450 ATX Mid Tower Case

Now the choice is:

Asus MAXIMUS VII HERO ATX LGA1150 Motherboard
    £169.99

    Gigabyte Z97X-SLI
    £89.99

Both are Z97 motherboards as I'm sure you all know. I was first totally for the VII Hero, but recently I saw the gigabyte z97x SLI. The price difference is quite significant as you can see!

Few things to notice:
- I plan to overclock CPU in the near future (not extreme overclocking, will try to get it to 4.4 or 4.5GHz)
- I don't plan to SLi for a long time (might add another 980ti in about 2 years, if I don't just buy a better single GPU by then)

Does anyone know if the gigabyte mobo has cool leds like asus hero?

Anyway, what do you think? Which one would you go for and why? (perhaps a completely different one to those two?)

The Maximus VII Hero is one of the best overclocking boards in the LGA 1150 range. It is a fantastic board, but unless you're really going to be heavily overclocking you'll be paying a premium for hardware you won't fully use.

If you can afford the Hero and plan to really dive into overclocking it is one of the best choices you could make. If you just want a mild CPU OC you could probably get away with a board like the Gigabyte without losing out on much.

Personally I'd get the Hero VII, but that's because with the hardware you listed above I'd be planning on seriously OC'ing. Those are fantastic components.

Here's a review of the Gigabyte GLI http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/motherboards/2014/05/11/z97-motherboard-group-tests/11 It's a cheap board, but the reviewers got to 4.7Ghz on it with a i7 4770K. The board should be good for 4.4 to 4.5.
No cool LEDs AFAIK, but the 80 pound difference buys a lot!

Much will depend on your CPU. With only four light undoubled phases, I would rather have something better MYSELF, but I also believe the reviews and it seems the SLI will do what you want to.

I would rather go 'big air' than liquid. The Kraken is excellent, but not really needed for the sort of overclock you say you want. I'd save money there.

Thank you everyone for your replies.

So glad to hear that you like my build. :)
Spent a lot of time researching components, reading reviews, looking at benchmarks, etc so it's always nice to see that the outcome is indeed good.

You're all right, I guess. Good components need a good motherboard. I won't go cheap on this one. Ordering Asus Maximus VII Hero right now.

Since all of you pretty much seem to agree on the part that this build will overclock well I might actually give it a go and try to get as much as I can from it. Should definitely learn more about overclocking process first.

Once again, many thanks for all your help.
