Hey guys,

Having a really weird issue with a laptop here (not sure if this is in the right section of the forums). It is a Toshiba Satellite C870. I recently replaced the hard drive on it, as the old one had died, and installed a fresh copy of windows 7. Since doing this, I have been having an issue using USB drives.

The laptop has two USB 2.0 ports and one USB 3.0 port. Now, when I use a USB 3.0 flash drive in the 3.0 port, it works no problem. The USB is immediately recognized and opens as usual (tested this with a few 3.0 drives and they all work the same). Now, if I plug that same 3.0 drive into any of the 2.0 ports, nothing comes up at all. The system doesn't make the sound of a drive being plugged in and the drive doesn't show up anywhere (disk manager, device manager, nothing).

For USB 2.0 drives they don't work in any ports at all, the 2.0 ports or the 3.0 ports.

Under device manager there are two unknown devices that show up, one of which has the yellow caution symbol.

I have tried uninstalling all of the USB devices and reinstalling. I tried downloading drivers from Toshiba for this model. I have tried everything that I can think of or find online but can't find a solution to this problem.

If anyone has any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Josh.

Solution
Moving to laptops General discussion as this appears to be a driver issue.

While waiting for help, it would be advisable that you provide the complete model# (C870-????)

Thanks.
