Hi,

I am asking this for a friend. His computer has recently been crashing everytime he plays a game (about 5 minutes after getting into a game) We have noticed that his GPU usage goes up to 100% before his computer shuts off. Well we assumed it was a graphics card problem so he just bought a new graphics card and installed it today. However, when we got on to play he still crashed. We just don't know what the problem is and are not that well educated with computer hardware problems. If anyone could offer an explanation that would be great.

Thanks

Do many different games crash, or just one specific game?
If it just one specific game, it is more likely that there is a bug in the game (a pretty common thing) and you could try contacting the developer.

GPU (or CPU) load of 100% does not indicate a fault.

It's every game he plays not just one, so I don't know what would be the problem

It's an intel i5 2310, fans are working I think he has stock cooling. He also recently cleaned out his PC from dust last week and he's not overclocking.

According to the Intel spec,
http://ark.intel.com/products/53445/Intel-Core-i5-2310-Processor-6M-Cache-up-to-3_20-GHz

The CPU case temperature should be under 72C.

There was also a CPU bug (BJ53)
http://www.intel.com.au/content/dam/www/public/us/en/documents/specification-updates/2nd-gen-core-desktop-specification-update.pdf
Causing the CPU to hang after thermal throttling if a certain instruction is executed.

Can you get the case fans to run faster?
Is the heat sink correctly connected to the CPU (the Intel stock heatsinks have rubbish plastic connectors that fall out)?
Did someone apply thermal paste to the CPU?

Okay so overheating in the processor is definitely a problem. As for your other questions I am not sure I'll have to ask him tomorrow but I do know that he has not applied thermal paste which I thought was strange. Would the addition of thermal paste help cool it significantly?

Alright he bought some thermal paste today from Best Buy and applied it. It seemed to lower it by only a couple of degrees and he ended up crashing fairly quick after starting up the game.
