I am running windows 10
I have a HDD that was in my NAS box (network can no longer access it, connection denied). I pulled the HDD out and hooked it up as an external drive. The drive can be seen under disk manager but it’s not seen under “this PC” so I can’t get my data off of it. It shows up under disk manager as a primary drive. There was no available option under disk manager to set it as a secondary drive so it can get a drive letter (and it’s SATA so no jumpers). Do you know of any way for me to get my data off the HDD?

Thanks.

What do you know about the NAS setup?

Maybe the NAS was running a version of Linux and the disks were formatted with the EXT3 / EXT4 file system. Or maybe there were several drives in a RAID setup. This would explain why you can see the physical drive, but not the content.

So check this first. Once you discover the file system, there are several options for mounting foreign file systems under Windows.

(if it turns out the file system should be NTFS and you can't see the content, and can't assign a drive letter, then there are other file caving options you can use to get some of the files back, but it probably means the drive is bad).

Thanks, i'll check out what the file system is. This is a Buffalo LinkStation single drive so no RAID. I'll report back what I find.

Here is what I found (and you were correct)
From an examination of its software, it's clear that the EZ runs Linux 2.6 and BusyBox 1.1.1 with ash. The Samba version is 3.0.24. The internal filesystem is formatted as EXT3, while the NAS share is XFS.

Now the question is how do I mount it in windows to access the content?
Thanks!
