if you put a os on a usb and move it to new hd do you need product key?

I have windows 7 on a acer lapatop from 2008, if I put the OS on a USB and move it to a fresh desktop with a new WD blue 1 tb do i need a product key to install or should I order i new one when i get my PC parts

So many issues with this.

1. You can't take an installed OS and just put on a USB stick and expect things to work
2. Licensing. The OS license from that Acer is OEN, and as such will not be valid
3. How were you expecting to put this OS on the USB?

I am sorry for my lack of knowledge w/ Operating Systems. I came to the forums to see if i could maybe save extra money for my build

Yes, we all want to save money. And not knowing is no problem.
But this is like taking the RAM out of your laptop and wanting it to work in your new desktop.
