Hello community. Today I have a question. What type of server is used for online gaming. For example: what is the name of the server that you play Call of Duty online on?. I am starting game developing on steam. For those of you who dont know what steam is, it is Amazon for games. Anyway, I need to know what I need to buy to use as a game server. I in no way desire to rent servers, I want to build my own.

Before writing off renting a server, there are some serious advantages you may want to consider...

You get a dedicated, high speed line, no parts to replace, reliable uptime, support, and probably a lot more I've left out... Hosting your own rig, I assume you mean to run it at home? There's a good chance you wont have the internet connection you'd want for this type of thing, plus power redundancy, and a lot of other intangibles.

Anyway, when it comes to the hardware, you'll want to figure out how much RAM you need for the project you're doing, and Xeon CPU's are fairly common, which knocks down the price on eBay. In my opinion, you might want to consider something like an HP workstation, for example, a z620. It is a desktop style with server class parts. But really, do consider a VPS first, a dedicated server second. It might meet your requirements and save you a lot of extra hassle.

I have to agree in saying you may just want to rent a server. However, if you really want to build your own server than the starting point would be what your budget is. I will post a build below before knowing your budget and make it less than $1200 USD.

I don't know much about servers but it looks decent. Could probably save a good amount of money or get a better cpu by buying your cpu used.

My budget is $5500. And Im going to be making a massive online multiplayer. I already have the game created. All i need is the server. So thankyou for the tips. I just might rent a server. But i need two things. 1: for someone to give me a guide to setting up a home server, and 2, for someone to post a few good host server providers.

I highly suggest asking these two questions in another forum post as this post seems to have not really populated and I really don't know much about server computers.
