I can hear a strange high pitched noise coming from around the CPU area

My self build desktop has been having a recurring problem in the form of a high pitched noise that seem to originate from around the CPU area. I do not believe that it is coil whine however, I do not see how the CPU would be capable of making such a noise. I am running Win 7 Pro - AMD Phenom II X6 1090T Processor - 16gb DDR3 Ram.

I managed to record the sound that this makes, so I was hoping that maybe someone else has had this occur and has some suggestions as to fix it and or inform whether it is a serious problem? I use my desktop for video and photo editing primarily so could it be a case of over straining the desktop?

Yep that is coil whine. My old AMD system did that when it had an Athlon 64 X2 5600+ in it. When I upgraded to a Phenom II X4 820 it went away thankfully. Overclocking can help reduce it or change the tone but mainly all you can do is make sure cool 'n quiet is enabled in the bios and live with it or replace the motherboard.

You may actually be able to reduce the voltage to the CPU if you have it stock. Assuming you built your own system that is. I cannot tell you what coil it is coming from, but it is usually one on the power delivery to the CPU. If the coils are exposed you can put a drop of epoxy on it to stop the vibration. I think this unlikely though as the only coils I see on any recent motherboards are encased in a plastic cube with a tiny hole on top.
