I just rebuilt a system that was going to only be my CAD unit. I had an old Athlon processor that I used in a Dell, and purchased an Asus M5A99FX Pro motherboard. Plus I used a Samsung 840 SSD & EVGA GTX 780 video card I had from an overbuilt prior system.
Due to a coffee spill, my main communication machine (HP Envy17) has been rendered useless. so this machine needs to fulfill more functions.
I first of all want to upgrade the processor, and don't know if it is really necessary to go to the higher wattage 8 core AMD's vs. the 6 core. I won't be running any games on this, but may be running some video editing software... Eventually I want to run a 4K monitor along with the 2560x1440 unit I am running now. So I am concerned that I also may be better served by a R9 or Firepro video card, but don't want to exceed $200.
So are the 8 cores really useful vs. 6 cores?
Will I be better served by an AMD based video card on this system?

And yes, I won't be packing up Ebay items on my desk ever again. That coffee cost me a lot, now the Envy is on Ebay for parts, LOL..

Thank you for reading, Larry T. :)
Happy Holidays

I run a 8320 at home for my gaming/3d render/cad machine. I have it overclocked to 4.2 ghz and it runs like a dream. It almost keeps up with the Xeons that we have at the school i teach at. If the 780 still works, I would run that. If not look at the firepro. I don't think you could get a quadro for that price.
