Computer Freezing During Gameplay

Hey guys,

I've been having this problem for awhile now, I built my PC around 2009, and I've started using it again to play some video games (Diablo 3 and WoW). At the time I was using a GeForce 9800+ and my computer started dead freezing randomly while I was playing through these games. I took my PC to a shop to run some diagnostic tests, and what the tech concluded was that the video card might be faulty, because he switched the card out with a spare and it seemed to work fine.

So I upgraded my card to a EVGA GTX 950, installed it fine, got the latest drivers without a problem, and my PC was running great for about a week. Last night, my PC did a dead freeze again after about 7-8 hours of playing Diablo. Figured it was someone telling me take a break, so I went to bed. Next day, booted it up, and I was only about to get in about 2-3 hours before it happened again, and then the next was around 1-2 hours. I've also been checking my temperatures pretty closely, but they don't seem to be spiking at around when these freezes happen. My CPU cores seem to stabilize around 55-60 during gameplay, and my GPU seem to spike at 65 degrees. I'm kind of desperate now since I've put in a decent amount of money, and was hoping if you guys had any idea what may be going on. Here are my specs below:

Windows 7 64bit
EVGA GTX 950 (latest drivers as of today)
XFX mb-750i-72p9 (latest bios as of today)
Intel Core2 Quad Q8400
750W PSU
4gigs of ram

Thanks guys for your time,
Thanh

Windows 9? Do you mean windows 10?

Here are things to try:

Run an antivirus scan with Malwarebytes (malwarebytes.org).
Make sure windows update says your up to date.
Run a disk check.

If these doesn't work then there is a high chance it's your RAM, 4GB is way below the recommended requirement for a gaming rig today, I suggest uping it to 8GB.

TechyInAZ,

Whoops, sorry. I should have read through my post for typos, It's actually supposed to be Windows 7.

I'm running Windows Security Essentials, and I've done a full scan the other day, and everything came up fine.
It was just about a month ago I wiped my computer and reinstalled the OS, I spent the first few hours getting all my updates up to date on windows. I haven't done a disk check yet, which are you talking about in particular? I'm not to computer savvy, so dumb things down for me. :D

You really think the 4gigs is low? I'm not running anything super intense, and everything I've looked online said that 4 gigs seems to be fine.

I wouldn't trust security essentials, anything free like that isn't guaranteed to give you the best security. Try malwarebytes, it just scans your computer and is free. (It's the best of the best when it comes to finding viruses.)

When playing your most demanding game, try and alt+tab out of the game and go into task manager. See what the memory usage is at. If it is next to or at 90% or higher, then you need to upgrade your RAM.

TechyInAZ,

Oh, wow. Yeah. I have Diablo up running right now, tabbed out, and I'm using about 85% of my memory.
Guess I'll purchase some new sticks.

Thanks for the help!

Your welcome. What's probably happening is the game is taking up so much RAM that windows starts moving some of the files located in the RAM to the virtual RAM folder on your hard drive, making everything slower.

Hello,

Back again, So I've upgraded my ram to 8gigs. And my PC ended up locking up again while I was running WoW. :/

Still open to more suggestions!

Thanks,
Thanh
