Hi,

I have a new build I'm gonna switch on for the first time shortly.

The plan is to only have an SSD drive initially - a Samsung 850 evo 250GB.

Can I just boot up with the windows CD in the drive and install straight onto the SSD ?

I've read some posts about AHCI setting in the bios.. is there anything different I need to do installing onto an SSD vs a conventional hard drive ? or can I just treat the SSD the same as a regular drive and install as normal ?

Solution
Hi WoodyRed,

Yes the same, just make it AHCI and don't full format and disable defrag in windows for the SSD. You dont have to do it like on a normal drive and it is actually bad for the SSD.

hope this helps,
Gabor

You can treat it same. Make sure you got AHCI enabled in bios. If it's new build it will mostlikely default to AHCI.
Also there is chance that when you will be making partitions during Win 7 setup it will tell you, that you can't create partition on that disk.
Just click on load drivers from disk (mostlikely it won't find anything) and after that cancel setup, restart system and run setup again.
This time it should load drivers from CD/DVD and allow you to create partitions on SSD.
I had this problem recently when I was installing Win 7 on Samsung 840 Evo 500GB and just restarting system and running again from CD fixed it. Probably during 1st run it does not load all drivers, but on 2nd run it loaded them correctly.
