I need serious help as I have lost control over my Acer Aspire 5472Z laptop wiith Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit OS. (Pentium P6100 2.0 GHz processor and 4 GB RAM)

My computer froze and I pressed the power key to bail out. Normally, it would start all fine but that time the Windows Startup Repair started. I thought it was just a regular repair but turns out my system has become corrupted in some way. I can access the safe mode (with networking), which is good news, but the bad news is that Avast does not run in the safe mode because the original installation was corrupted by the startup repair problem. Whenever a scan is attempted, the error message reads:

http://imgur.com/HCkFsaZ

Unable to start scan. There are no more endpoints available in the endpoint mapper.

I used the cleanup utility and reinstalled it, but it would only show me in partial protected state when I am in the normal mode of the Windows. At least the normal mode would give me the option of running scans, which runs in a very weird way, despite processing the entire drive, the progress percentage remains at 0% and running over and over again.

I have run a thorough malware check with Spybot S&D in normal mode, as well as in the safe mode, which returns only the usual cookies and cache and a couple of registries as a problem, so apparently nothing serious and nothing out of the ordinary. Earlier, I had seen a blue screen of death with a .sys file causing the problem during the scan.

The worst bit is that boot-time scans are not running too, which probably almost confirm the presence of serious malware. Either that, or perhaps the problem has seriously damaged the anti-virus, though not sure if that is the reason. The problem is that the scans are not credible at all in the normal mode, and would not run in the safe mode or at boot-time.

Should I try Kaspersky instead?

Furthermore, the power management and system resume have all gone bad, for now at least. The system would not go to standby when I close the monitor panel. And every time I am stuck in the normal mode, bailing out by pressing the power button risks the running of Windows Startup Repair again, which nullifies all the work done in terms of antivirus and Spybot S&D installation. For now, I just remove the power cable to let it die by itself and hit the "Last Know Good Configuration" to startup without losing all the system cleaning progress.

I find it important to mention that I have 8 GB free disk space out of the usable 452 in the 500 GB HDD. While I'll work on freeing some more space too, it's not a priority right now, because my computer has been running perfectly with even lesser space for several months. This problem surely has more to do with something else. Do let me know if the case is otherwise. Either way, I'd be backing up disk data on a new external hard drive.

I need some help. I need to regain access of my computer in the environment I wanted. So would appreciate if you take your time to give your input. There gotta be a safe way.

Also let me know if copying data through the safe mode would keep it protected from malware in case of the worst case scenario of the new OS installation.

When you force a shutdown it can cause file system issues or hard drive issues, which then result in that Windows recovery message because Windows can't read some file or registry key.

You seemed to have skipped something because at first you were talking about the system not booting unless to Safe Mode then you say something about the antivirus not working properly in normal boot. Does the system load Windows OK without Safe Mode just with some issues with the anti-virus?

You can try to run the sfc /scannow command at a dos prompt and see if that does anything. Also do a disk check and defrag although you want to have backups done in case there are drive issues and the drive crashes.

If there's nothing important on your computer, you can try formatting your drives.
If there is important stuff, there is an old program called Trinity Rescue Kit. Download it, put it on a CD/DVD, and boot from it. It has a built in virus scanner.

Thank you guys. The computer gets a little shaky every now and then, but now it's working perfectly after a series of scans. I usually never go for the format option. Consider this thread resolved.
