Hey guys I'm upgrading my PC with a new CPU and motherboard. Which do you guys recommend? I was thinking about and i5 4690k or a i5 6500k.
Here are my current specs:
GTX 960 2gb
i3 3240t 2.99 GHz
12 GB of DDR3 Ram
ASUSTeK K5130 (motherboard)

^^ Pretty much what he said. I have a 4670k - very quick processor, tweaked it up to constant 4.1ghz and it's a happy camper right there. Only thing is, Haswell is now two generations old, and any upgrading is going to require all-new stuff.

Skylake is current gen, you'll pay a little more for it, but it has an upgrade path for the next few years. Given a choice -now- I would just bite the bullet and get the Skylake setup. DDR4, good overclocking, M.2 drives, more PCIe lanes etc.

It's just a more modern platform to build off of.

The 4690k is very fast, can be overclocked with a good quality H series motherboard, making it very good value for money.

The skylake 6500 is more future proof, and slightly faster, but you pay extra for CPU, memory and mobo

Maybe, depends on the motherboard you pick. Some of the manufacturers offer the Skylake boards with the DDR3L sockets for RAM. In general though the whole reason to go with Skylake over Haswell is to utilize the newer features - like DDR4.

So - pay attention when you get your mobo, make sure it's a DDR4 motherboard.
