Hello everyone!
I am currently in a dillema at buying ram for my Pc. My sistem specs are:
-i5 4690k
-gtx970
-gigabyte g1sniper z87 motherboard
-2X4 gb DDR3 Crucial ballistix sport xt 1866mhz ram
I am needing more ram because i have multi monitors and like to do more than just play a game at the same time and i experience quite high ram usage...
So Here is the deal :
I can get the same model ram in a 2X8 gb version (they dont have the exact same 2X4gb version in stock) and have 4 sticks in my motherboard for a total of 24gb. Or I can sell the ram I have and buy only a 2X8gb kit of any brand I like. I dont really need more than 16gb but I also dont like to sell things...So what do you think I should do? Is there any performance decrease for ex. in Star Wars Battlefront if I would be running 4 sticks of not exact same capacity? And is my ram good enough, since I think ram impacts quite a bit on gaming because I noticed a 20fps difference by going from 1333mhz to 1866mhz?Should i Just sell these and get some gskill 2100mhz ram?

Solution
Think you already have it figured out go with a 2x8GB of your choice, 1866/9 is goor or 2133/9 (generally about the same price), mixing DRAM, even another set of your current sticks is a 50/50 crapshoot, they might play they might not. If they play with your current sticks then it's a bonus and you have 24GB, else sell them, stick in another rig or save as a backup.

It is not a necessity but most PC experts do prefer using the same ram from the same package. Since they have been tested together before shipping, so if you want to do a dual set up, buy 2x8 for the 16GB that you prefer, or go 4x4 to achieve 16. I myself do not know the exact number on how much better ram is when it comes from the same package compared to mix and matching your ram

I am running Windows 8.1
@bamanec : I have nothing to lose with buying another crucial ram because I can still Use only 16gb and sell the old ones if they maybe dont work together? I Just dont think these crucial ballistix are good performers especially at cl10

I have always been a Kingston or G.Skill fan, never paid attention to performance from the Crucial ballistix. So I do not know I am sorry

how can you tell?

i don't mean to make that sound like an accusation, but the chances you could even tell are small. there might be a 1fps gain going to better ram. not much else. that's why i'm asking.

@bamanec: My friend has got a Kingston HyperX FURY 2X4gb 1866mhz ram kit and i am getting like 1fps lower with that Kingston ram (tried it yesterday). How does that compare to a gskill 2100mhz 2X8gb kit ram?

@ingtar33 I tried to put my ram at 1600mhz insted of 1866mhz and it made An average of 10fps difference. But I dont think any higher would also make a difference. A jump from 1333mhz to 1866 made far cry 4 run at 20 fps more...

Can't tell you just yet, my 3000mhz ram is still on its way :)

yes, but 1866 cl9 is pretty much the sweet spot for both Haswell and Piledriver; UNLESS you are using the on chip graphics

even for haswell, when using a discrete gpu, the fastest ram ever tested was mushkin ddr3 1866 cl9 Redline ram. none of those ddr3 3000mhz ram ever produced better numbers; that's because 1866mhz seems to be about the practical limit for the haswell memory controller. That's not saying faster ram won't make a BIG difference if you're using the on chip graphics of the cpu. In that case you'll see massive gains every time you step it up in speed.
