Hello,
I'm trying to test Windows 10 on Hyper-V (attempting to find if I can use any of the "disable forced updates" hacks, and I need an internet connection for this).

My laptop is connected to the internet using an USB modem (Windows 8.1).

Tutorials from a quick google search, suggest creating a new "External Network" virtual switch, binding it to the physical network adapter, and then configuring the virtual machine to use this switch.

But when I try this, the only option I get is for my WiFi adapter, not my USB modem.

And if I select any of the other options (Internal/Private network), the virtual machine won't let me access the internet (this is expected I guess?)

Is there a (simple/quick) way to resolve this problem and get the virtual machine connected to the internet?
I don't have WiFi here :-(

Solution

Okay I got it to work, strange this solution doesn't come up in a google search.
Here's what I did:
STEP 1 : Create a Virtual Internal Network in the Virtual Switch Manager

STEP 2: Configure Hyper-V VM to use the network in (step 1) as a "Legacy Network".

STEP 3: On the host system, share the USB modem connection with the Hyper-V virtual network connection...

You are on the right track in making the external switch for the VM to get connection.

It this USB modem you are using a dial up connection? It sounds like it may be a limitation to be used as an external switch.

Saywhut, thanks for your reply.
It's a wireless modem, it hooks up to a 4G LTE network and provides internet access, sort of like a cell phone.
Yes, I have to dial a number to get it connected- it's like one of them 56k dial-up modems, the only differences being it's much faster(14Mbps), and it doesn't connect to a telephone wire (it uses a sim card).

STEP 4: DISCONNECT and RECONNECT the HOST system from the internet.

STEP 5: Launch the VM. And we're done, Hyper-V VM can now access the internet

This is a ONE TIME setup, once we've done this, we don't need to do this over and over again. As long as the host's network settings are not changed, the guest OS will always be able to access the internet :)

The issue is resolved :bounce:
