I'm planning on buying a new GPU for my brothers PC this Christmas but I'm stuck between 2 cards... The GTX 670 or the GTX 960.

Currently, I can buy the Asus GTX 670 with the DirectCU II cooler for £110 preowned but looks brand new and never used. (Plymouth - CEX) But I'm also thinking about a EVGA GTX 960 SSC ACX 2.0 which will cost £175 (amazon.co.uk)

After 2 weeks of researching, I have come to the conclusion that they're near identical, in performance. The 670 had more CUDA and texture mapping cores with a higher bandwidth and texture rate, but the 960 has a higher pixel rate and the newer architecture.

His current system:
CPU: AMD FX-4100 @ 4.5GHz
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-78LMT-USB3 (Rev 4.1)
GPU: XFX Radeon HD 6670 2GB DDR3
PSU: EVGA SuperNova G2 750watt (I bought him for his birthday)
SSD: Kingston HyperX 3K 240GB
HDD: Western Digital Blue 1TB

He is wanting to play titles such as Watch Dogs, GTA V, CoD BO3 and Far Cry 4, but he is isn't too fussed with the settings, as long as it can play at 60+FPS at medium.

Many thanks

- Joe

The 960 is a much better card. The 670 would more closely compare to a 760, and the 960 is one generation after that.

:edit: Another card to consider would be the Radeon 380. Seems to perform better than a 960 for the same price range(usually cheaper). He is also using a Radeon card now, so there wouldn't be any drivers to reinstall or remove, so easier upgrade.

That isn't a bad idea actually, and there is a XFX Radeon R9 270X in the shop, would that be a decent card?

It is a decent card, but I'd rather have a 960 over the 270x. I'd go 960 > 670(price difference) > 270x. I was just looking online and saw the 380's at cheaper than most 960's.

Don't know if an online purchase is possible for ya, but there are many options for the 960 and 380 for quite a bit cheaper than the 175 you are looking at:

Oh, well although the AMD card is a nice idea, I would still rather go with a Nvidia card mainly because I've always had better results with Nvidia.

I've also used the website Flubit and they're offering me £143.89 for the 960, so it is very tempting... But I just do not know...

Oh, no... We pay for electricity, but it isn't a issue because it is ridiculously cheep. Don't know the exact price per kilowatt or anything, all I know is that he has 2 PCs, 3 laptops, 52inch LG plasma, and a bunch of other stuff and he only needs to put on £20 a week for electricity. :D God knows how he does it, I've even asked him and he doesn't even know xD

So, the 670 is a more powerful card, but 960 isn't far behind and because of it being newer tech, it should be better?

The 960 will be better. Less memory bandwidth. But much faster core clock and memory clock speeds eat the difference. Add in newer tech, newer optimizations, newer codecs, and much lower power consumption and cooler temperatures, and it's an easy decision. Also, add in a full manufacturer's warranty for buying a new unit.

True, true... But the card pre-owned from the shop also gets 3 years warranty. Also, the 670 has more CUDA and shader cores, wont that have a fairly big inpack on performance?

That is my opinion yes...
