Hi Guys,

Please, I need some help.

I have had a 4TB Samsung M3 External HDD for about a month.

I has been working no problem, until 2 strange occurrences happened on my computer and I don't know if they are related -

I get home from work and turn on my PC, and all my passwords/usernames for various applications are gone (for example steam). And the same thing happened to my brother's laptop. I had them all in "remember password", but for some reason all were removed. Also the external drive had a problem from this time too. The drive shows up with a a letter and I can see the initial files and folders in explorer, but when I try and open the main folder where everything is, it just crashes. I can still move the mouse and do other things, but explorerer is just dead. And I cannot exit or force quit exploerer. I have to restart PC or log out and back in. I tried the HDD on 2 lap tops and it also freezes those, although on one occasion it worked fine on the laptop with no problems and I could access everything on there?? but after that one time, it now freezes on that laptop too.

I tried to view the files in Command Prompt - it freezes command prompt as soon as I enter the main folder.

I tried using the Samsung diagnostic tools - nothing seems to happen when I run the test. It acts as if it is testing the drive, but the progress bar doesn't move. So I am thinking that maybe it is freezing up this too.

It seems like whatever accesses the drives files or folders freezes. A few times in Windows Exploerer I was recieving an I/O error.. but only about 3 times and I haven't seen it since.

I'm out of ideas here. I don't want to lose the data on the drive. I'd rather try and save what's on there before I return it.

Does anyone know why this would have happened? Could a power surge have caused this? or a virus attacking the router? Both me and my brother were not at home and my PC was off, and his laptop was off. We come home and our PC/lap top are all messed up and my harddrive isn't working... but I don't get how a virus could attack us both if the PC/Laptop are switched off?

Thanks,

Hi there Vu_1__,

Sometimes, I/O(input/output) error can be caused by a faulty cable. This is why, you can just start with using a different one. In case the issue persists, you can try to boot up Ubuntu either from a CD or a flash drive and try to access the drive: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/267999-32-recover-data-mode
In case the issue persists, then I guess there is something with the enclosure or the HDD itself. I doubt that you will be able to access it with software tools. Yet, you can try some data recovery tool for DOS mode.

Let me know how this goes,
